Agapanthus africanus is a variety of African Lilly also known as 'Lily of the Nile' and is native to South Africa's Cape of Good Hope. The African Lilly is a herbaceous perennial widely used for its fantastic clusters of deep blue globe-shaped flowers that appear on upright stems in summer. Agapanthus africanus is a great choice in a wide range of applications from formal beds, to dry gardens or Mediterranean planting schemes, and is also a popular choice in containers. The Agapanthus africanus is widely used in exposed areas happily tolerating strong/coastal winds.

Caring for Agapanthus africanus is fairly straight-forward. Agapanthus has fairly average watering needs throughout the growing season (mid-April to September) , keep the plant moist but not waterlogged.

Feed Agapanthus africanus regularly with a high potash feed throughout the growing season to encourage flowering. Agapanthus africanus will thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, the soil is important as winter water-logging will generally rot the dormant bulbs. If the soil is poorly drained grow Agapanthus africanus in a container.

It is recommended to keep Agapanthus africanus pot-bound to encourage flowering, this is indeed true, but be careful with this approach, if the Agapanthus africanus is too pot-bound it will cause the plant to flower poorly and eventually die.

Common Names - Agapanthus africanus is known as the African Lilly or the Lilly of the Nile.
