The elegant Acer palmatum widely known as the Japanese maple is a deciduous small tree from Japan, that is renowned for it dazzling varieties of foliage throughout spring and summer. There are a huge range of Japanese Maples to choose from differing greatly in form, leaf shape and of course leaf colour.

Japanese Maples usually have an attractive open habit that requires very little pruning, generally just a tidy-up of any damaged branches will be all that is necessary. Though if done any heavy pruning should be done in late winter.

Caring for the Acer palmatum or Japanese Maple is simple. Japanese Maple requires only moderate watering, but must be kept moist when in full leaf, this is especially true if containerised. Look to feed the Japanese Maple once a
month through late April to September.

Japanese Maple will do best in well-drained soil in a bright but sheltered spot that has protection from midday summer sun, generally if you can keep Japanese Maple in a sheltered site not in south facing hot spots and not in more than part shade it will thrive. Another thing to watch with the Japanese Maple is strong winds. Most varieties will cope with moderate winds, but strong winds will cause leaf damage.

Japanese Maples can offer all year round interest, the elegant branch structure gives great interest through the colder months, and the fantastic show of dazzling foliage will give excellent form and colour through spring and summer.

Japanese Maple makes a wonderful focal point in a small courtyard, or in a Japanese-style garden or is a super choice in a container or small garden.

 | Naughty Puppy!

Thank you for the delivery of my plants, which arrived well within the anticipated delivery time and in excellent condition. Unfortunately my puppy ate the banana tree!! So may well be ordering another, if it doesn't recover!
