Bamboo is widely used as a screening plant, is wonderfully effective around water features or even as a standalone specimen in a container. In most cases bamboo is very simple to look after and generally grows like mad. But there are a few things you can do to make sure you get the best out of a bamboo.</p> <p><strong>Choosing the right Bamboo plant</strong></p> <p>We stock only the most reliably hardy bamboo, and also importantly bamboo that is non-invasive. So rest-assured if you plant out one of our bamboos you won't find it appearing in next-doors lawn by next year. Our bamboo varieties are only clump forming. They will grow and grow vigorously but the growth will only increase the size of the existing clump. And when the clump starts getting too big, put your spade through it and divide it - creating new plants, division is best done in spring before the new stems appear. The main bamboo plant varieties we stock are <a title="Black Bamboo" href="http://www.athelasplants.co.uk/bamboo-c6/phyllostachys-nigra-p50" target="_blank">black bamboo</a> (Phyllostachys nigra) <a title="Yellow Groove Bamboo" href="http://www.athelasplants.co.uk/bamboo-c6/phyllostachys-aurea-p10" target="_blank">Yellow Groove Bamboo</a> (Phyllostachys aurea), Green sulcus Bamboo (Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis') and the big leaved Arrow Bamboo (Pseudosasa japonica). For a low growing option there is the <a title="Japanese Bamboo" href="http://www.athelasplants.co.uk/bamboo-c6/sasa-tsuboiana-p53" target="_blank">Japanese Bamboo</a> (Sasa tsuboiana) or Fargesia. All of the bamboo at Athelas Plants are evergreen and hardy.</p> <p><strong>Situation</strong></p> <p>Selecting bamboo for your garden or growing area is fairly straightforward, just a couple of simple rules. Do not plant bamboo in very windy exposed areas, this will cause the leaves to shred. And be aware that if bamboo is planted in very well-drained soils it will need a high degree of watering and feeding to flourish.</p> <p><strong>Caring for Bamboo</strong></p> <p>Bamboos respond to water, they love a good drink. This is especially important for establishment of new plants. Adequate water will ensure survival, and more water will bring larger, more vigorous development. Regular watering throughout the growing season, especially during new shoot season, brings the best results.<br />Bamboos are grasses, and grasses thrive on good nutrition. They are also adaptable and tolerant, they can be neglected and still survive. However, if you want your bamboo to thrive and flourish, a regular <a title="Liquid Feed" href="http://www.athelasplants.co.uk/sundries-c15/organic-foliar-feed-p6" target="_blank">liquid feed</a>, composted manures, or any organic topdressing will bring vigorous happy bamboos.<br />Bamboos are great specimen plants in containers, just be a little more attentive to them, as more water and feed maybe needed due to the free draining nature of container mediums.
