While many palm trees originate from some of the globe's most exotic corners, the dwarf fan palm is something of an anomaly, as it is the only palm tree native to Europe.
Also known as the Chamarops humilis, it is an excellent choice for windy situations due to its notable hardiness, meaning it can be placed in exposed areas of the garden.
The dwarf fan palm also looks stunning when placed in a pot on a patio or could even be used as an interesting feature in a courtyard.
Wherever the dwarf fan palm is used, it makes an excellent focal point, due to its stunning evergreen fan-shaped leaves.
A slow growing specimen, it is shorter than other palm trees - often only reaching head height - and requires little upkeep, other than a monthly application of foliar feed from mid-April to September and a little pruning back old fronds in spring and autumn.
Try mixing up a dwarf fan palm in an exotic themed border with the Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) and chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) for a truly spectacular display.
