While many palm trees require at least semi-bright spaces, the bamboo palm will flourish even where light is scarce.
Also known as the Chamaedorea seifrizi, this attractive indoor palm is known for its similarities with bamboo due to its long canes and slender appearance.
A versatile plant, it is very easy to care for and requires little maintenance.
When finding a space for this striking exotic specimen, avoid areas near radiators as their heat can cause the plant to dry out quickly.
Also ensure the plant is given plenty of moisture during the growing season - although good drainage is important to avoid the bamboo palm sitting in water.
A liquid feed, applied every two to four weeks during the growing season, will also ensure the plant grows well and produces healthy, lush foliage.
During the winter, the frequency of watering should be reduced and feeding stopped altogether to give the palm time to rest.
As is the case with other indoor palms, such as the lady palm (Rhapsis excelsa) and pygmy date palm (Phoenix roebelenii), the bamboo palm can really light up a corporate or hospitality space, creating a warm and friendly feel.
