Unusual name, unusual appearance - the woolly jelly palm is one of the most striking palm trees available.
Also known as the Butia eriospatha, this medium-sized palm is notable for its distinctive woolly spathes (the jelly part of its name refers to the types of food that can be made from its produce).
To thrive in any British garden, it requires full sun, a sheltered position and well-drained soil.
The hardiest of the Butia species of palm, green-fingered enthusiasts should expect the woolly jelly palm to grow pretty quickly, and generally apart from tidying up old fronds once a year, this palm tree needs very little care.
Over time, it will develop into a stout-trunked palm with beautiful recurved leaves.
It is perfect for placing in an exotic-themed border with some other hardy palms such as the dwarf fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) and chusan palm (Trachycaprus fortunei).
A monthly application of a liquid feed between mid-April and September will also help keep the woolly jelly palm looking as interesting as its name suggests.
