Known for its swollen stem, the ponytail palm tree is often nicknamed the elephant's foot plant.

However, that is where the similarities end - unlike its animal namesake, this distinctive palm is a perfect low-fuss indoor palm.
 
The ponytail palm - or Beaucarnea recurvata to give it its Latin name - is the perfect choice for bright spaces, meaning it could be placed by a window, in a conservatory or in a greenhouse.
 
Even beginners will be able to cultivate this striking palm tree, as it requires very little care, other than a little occasional watering.
 
Like many other palms, it also benefits from a monthly dose of liquid feed from around mid-April to September.
 
Those who keep on top of tatty fronds will ensure the ponytail palm always looks its best.
