The highly scented Ginger lily is originally from the Himalayas region of Nepal and India. Hedychium greenii is truly a fantastic example of a big bold tropical herbaceous plant that we can grow in UK gardens.
Hedchium greenii has beautiful large red flowers with glossy green foliage that boasts maroon undersides. The sheer size of this Ginger Lilly along with its two tone foliage colour really makes this plant an excellent choice for a Jungle planting area, amongst bananas (Musa basjoo) and Elephants Ear (Colocasia). In a pot on the patio is also a great way to show off this beautiful jungle plant where its rich perfume can be appreciated in mid-summer.
Hedchium greenii will thrive planted out or in pots, and really does respond well to plenty of water and feed throughout the growing season. The Ginger Lilly is also surprisingly hardy and can withstand winter temperatures to around -5oC. But generally winter protection is recommended, and is simply achieved by removing the spent stems in late autumn and mulching over the top of the rhizomes to give a little insulation from hard ground frosts.
Fertilizer is essential for Hedychiums to get the very best from the plant, as is the case with most jungle plants. Click on Foliar Feed for our own formulated fertilizer, perfect for encouraging healthy strong foliage.
The Hedychium greenii is a must for the jungle enthusiast.
