Where to grow Orange Trees

Orange trees love to bask in bright hot sunny spots throughout the growing season, and then moved indoors in a light bright space for the colder months. Orange trees should be moved outside after the last frosts have passed in Spring and then returned inside comfortably before the first frosts begin in Autumn.

Overwintering Orange Trees

The change from indoors to outdoors can create a significant change in temperature which can upset Orange trees. Ideally Orange like to be over-wintered in cool indoor environments, in and around 5oc to 10oc. A heated greenhouse, sun room or conservatory will usually be best.

Caring for an Orange Tree

The key for Orange tree care is making sure the growing medium is very well drained, this cannot be emphasised enough, Orange trees hate sitting in water-logged soils. A good compost mixed with one third grit will do the job nicely.

Water Orange trees through the growing season when the tree is outdoors only once a week, and when over-wintering just once a month, but on each occasion really soak the tree.

Feeding Orange trees is usually achieved by applying a high nitrogen and iron feed through the growing season. and a balanced nitrogen and iron feed when over-wintering.

Orange trees really respond well to good hard prune just as the tree is moved outside in Spring. This will stimulate vigorous regrowth, and retain good shape.

Too much fruit left on the tree will result in a poor crop, thin out at least half the young crop to allow the focus of nutrients on a fewer number. Also remove ripe fruit from the tree, yes it does look nice on there, but leaving the fruit on the tree delays the onset of flowering and the next crop.
