  • Common Name: Buckler fern or Japanese Shield Fern
  • Situation: Partial shade in moist soils.
  • Height: 0.6m, Spread: 0.6m
  • Hardiness: Hardy

The Buckler fern is a striking Japanese deciduous fern, with large triangular-shaped fronds which when young are a majestic pink/red-colour that then mature to a handsome dark green. In milder areas of the UK this fern will stay evergreen, but in colder temperatures the fronds will die back. Also known as Dryopteris erythrosora this fern will thrive in any partial shade situation and will greatly benefit from moist heavy soils.

Due to its striking fronds this fern offers a beautiful contrast against other ferns and woodland plants, such as Tree ferns (Dicksonia antactica) or even Giant Rhubarb (Gunnera manicata) This hardy fern is ideally placed in rock gardens and woodland situations, but will be equally effective grown in a pot in covered areas and pergolas.

Caring for this Dryopteris fern is straightforward, plant out with humus-rich material such as well-rotted leaf mould, or garden compost, and trim back old tatty fronds in winter to encourage new growth.
