The graceful Lady fern, also known as Athyrium filix-femina is one of the most attractive of all the hardy ferns found native in the UK. Its striking bright green fronds grow to an impressive size sometimes upwards of a metre long making the Lady fern an ideal statement plant in woodland planting areas, amongst other ferns, or as a standalone potted specimen under covered areas and pergolas.
This fern works particularly well planted alongside the Buckler fern or amongst other shade loving evergreens such as Fatsia japonica or Mahonia.
Caring for this Athyrium fern is very low-fuss, plant out in a shady corner with humus-rich material such as well-rotted leaf mould or garden compost. And as the fern is deciduous trim back old dead fronds in winter, to encourage new growth.
