Musa basjoo ‘is worth experimenting with’

Exotic plant growers could enjoy cultivating a Musa basjoo banana plant.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), banana plants can make a "majestic addition to any conservatory or garden", thanks to their large, elegant leaves and "occasional bursts of fruit".

It explained that while the exotic plant can be tender, hardier versions of the species – such as the Musa basjoo – can survive British winters outdoors.

The RHS advice explained that the best time to start growing the exotic plant is late spring, with the premium location being a sheltered spot with well-drained soil.

"Once [the] plants are established, water and feed generously to get the best foliage," it added.

The BBC Plant Finder website explained that the Musa basjoo will typically flower in the summer months of July and August.

It added that gardeners can expect creamy yellow flowers with large brown bracts when the exotic plant comes into bloom.
