Cordyline australis ‘smells as nice as it looks’

Those who opt for Cordyline australis will be able to enjoy a fragrant garden this summer.

According to the Garden Diary website, these exotic plants smell as nice as they look – and the wonderful whiffs "flow around the garden".

It is an exciting time when the flowers of this pretty plant bloom into a beautiful display of white, the site’s creator Chrissie Harten stated.

The flowers will attract all manner of wildlife and insects into a yard, especially honey bees.

Ms Harten remarked: "The flowers are very attractive to bees and I counted around ten honey bees on just one of these flowers."

She said this was good news as these insects had not been seen regularly in her garden for a while.

Cordyline australis, also known as the cabbage palm, can grow to 15 metres in height.

To ensure good growth it needs well-drained soil and an area of the garden that offers full or partial sun.

It is an excellent choice for windy gardens.
