The ever-dramatic hardy evergreen Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) has a huge range of applications from tropical planting areas, to Japanese gardens. Black Bamboo is widely used as a screening plant, and is also wonderfully effective around water features or even as a standalone specimen in a container.
Due to the black bamboo striking canes fantastic contrast is achieved amongst other bamboo and tropical plants. Look to plant black bamboo amongst palms like the chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortuneii), evergreen shrubs like Fatsia japonica or herbaceous perennials like the Elephant Ear (Colocasia esculenta).
This sought-after Bamboo is wonderfully versatile and thrives in most conditions but do be aware not to plant black bamboo in very windy exposed areas, this will cause the leaves to shred. And also if Black bamboo is planted in very well-drained soils it will need a high degree of watering and feeding to flourish.
Black Bamboo respond to water, they love a good drink. This is especially important for establishment of new plants. Adequate water will ensure survival, and more water will bring larger, more vigorous growth. Regular watering throughout the growing season, especially during new shoot season, brings the best results.
Black Bamboo thrive on good nutrition. if you want your Black bamboo to thrive and flourish, a regular liquid feed, composted manures, or any organic topdressing through the growing season will bring vigorous happy Black bamboo.
