The spectacular grey-green Agave americana (Century Plant) is an evergreen perennial native to central american deserts. Agave americana and is ideally suited to hot sunbaked planting areas in dry gardens, rock gardens or as a potted specimen. It's spiky no-nonsense demeaner gives it great architecural value, and it's surprisingly fast growth rate will leave you with a real oversized statement plant.
The key with growing Agave americana is to find a planting environment that is very well drained, and in full-sun. So when planting out Agave americana add additional grit or gravel to the planting hole to maximise drainage. To prevent the base of the Agave americana sitting wet in winter, when planting try to raise it slightly above the surrounding area, so water runs from it rather than to it.
In the colder parts of the UK and in colder than usual winters try to keep the Agave americana as dry as possible and free from a build-up of snow.
We do recommend growing Agave americana in pots allowing the plant to be shifted it to hot spots for the summer months and then moved to a sheltered spot in winter.
This approach also takes advantage of a pots free draining nature.
When potted give the Agave americana an occasional water through summer and feed 2-3 times. In winter keep the plant as dry as possible, while it is dormant.
Agave americana is also known as the Century Plant, you may have other names for it once it's stabbed you a few times!
